PRESENTATION ON INCLUSIVE PLANNING AND ARCHITECTURE
IN DELHI AND KOCHI, August 17th 2010

This presentation and discussion to be held at Jamia Millia Islamia has been organized in follow-up to the July 22nd and 23rd workshop on inclusive planning and architecture in Delhi. It had provided the orientation for architecture students from Barcelona to work in cooperation with JMI students, staff and SAFP with support from UPC CCD Barcelona on the design of inclusive sustainable development areas in Delhi and Kochi.
1. DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROJECT
Over the last three weeks, the Spanish students split up into two groups, one of which worked in Delhi on the Okhla district, and the other on the Edakochi district of Kochi. The Delhi group worked in teams with architecture students from JMI on three different areas within Okhla: Batla House, Haji Colony and Abul Fazal, with the help of the local government organization for women, I.e Mission Convergence and Cequin, Muslim Women Forum, Zakir Hussain Memorial Society, Muslim Women’s Organisation, Aman trust in Delhi and The Edakochi group worked with Inspiration, Habitat and Kudumbashree, worked on two wards within the district: ward 15 and 16.
In both locations, the students, with the help of local staff conducted focus group discussions with local women’s self-help groups to understand the cultural traditions, the kind of economic activities women participate in, how they spend their income, what are the obstacles they face on a day to day basis, and what are their dreams and aspirations.
